Outlets and lights are wired in chains — power passes through one device on its way to the next. When a connection fails partway along, everything downstream goes dark. The dead outlet you're standing in front of is the end of the chain; the failure is at the boundary, frequently inside a device you're still using perfectly happily.

Every outlet, every light, every switch. A lamp or a phone charger is all you need. Mark each working or dead.
Where does working stop and dead begin? That transition is the single most useful sentence you can give us.

Counterintuitive, and it's the thing worth understanding.
Something has broken completely. Nothing flows through it, nothing heats, and it'll be identical tomorrow. Inconvenient, and that's all.
Current squeezes through a loose or corroded contact, and everything that doesn't get through comes out as heat, at that exact point, every time the circuit is used.
It works. It works most of the time. And it's getting hot while it does.
A connection making and breaking, arcing in between.
Load-related, and reporting something real. A dying bulb flickers randomly and independently.
Worn contacts.
Detecting something that isn't continuously present.
Damp, cold, and heat all affect marginal connections.
A fault that isn't happening can't be measured. It has to be reproduced — by loading the circuit, working through devices, or recreating the conditions. That's genuinely slower than tracing a clean break, and it's the honest reason two similar-sounding jobs price differently.
It's the fault actively deteriorating, and generating heat while it does.
A failure at or very near that device — a terminal that's let go, or contacts worn out.
Chained together, with the failure at the first dead one. Rule out a GFCI before assuming wiring.
The break is before the first device — in the run, at the panel terminal, or inside the breaker itself.
Something drew too much current or faulted to ground. Do the appliance check first.
A connection or supply issue rather than a lighting fault.

Stop using it. Discolouration means heat, and that's urgent rather than scheduled.

The most common finding by a distance. Screws loosened over decades of heating and cooling, push-in connections whose contacts relaxed, and conductors never properly clamped. Cheap to fix, and behind most dead outlets, flickers, and intermittents.
Outlets that no longer grip a plug, switches with degraded contacts, fittings at the end of their life. A loose grip is a poor contact, and a poor contact makes heat.
Nicked by a fixing during unrelated work, crushed, chewed, or degraded. Usually the finding when a whole run fails with no device fault.
Connections made without accessible enclosures during past work, hidden behind plaster or under floors.
